A booking agent work is to find gigs for you and will typically charge between a 10 and up to 20% of your gross income. All depends on the deal, contract, and your level of notoriety.
A manager, on the other hand, will oversee your entire business, that means endorsements, promotion, PR, bookings, merchandise, and all other derivative business. They will usually require a large percentage of your gross income, but they'll be doing a lot of the strategic and execution of running your business.
The question now becomes, do you need an agent or a manager? Here is what DIY musician advice,
“Booking agents work off commissions. In other words, they will get between 10% and 20% of the revenue from shows they book. If you’re only making a few hundred dollars a night, it’s probably not worth their efforts – they need to pay the rent too after all! On the other side of the equation, if you’re only making a few hundred dollars, you probably can’t afford to give up 10% or 20%! As you can see, booking agents would rather work with bands that have a proven track record of filling larger venues and theaters.”
